    Research Overview

  • Matthew Schmidt’s research investigates the mechanisms underpinning millennial scale climate change during the last glacial cycle. In particular, his research group generates high-resolution geochemical proxy records using fossil foraminifera collected from deep-sea sediments cores to reconstruct past changes in ocean and atmosphere circulation patterns. Dr. Schmidt routinely analyses foraminiferal carbonate shell material for a suite of minor and trace metals, including Mg/Ca ratios as a proxy for past temperature change and Ba/Ca ratios as a proxy for sea surface salinity variability. Over the past several years, he has been involved in a NSF-funded research project that involves measuring Mg/Ca ratios in both surface and subsurface dwelling planktonic foraminifera from the Eastern Equatorial Pacific, southern Caribbean and the Niger Delta to reconstruct both subsurface and subsurface temperature change over the last glacial cycle. His current NSF-funded research project (in collaboration with Dr. Tom Bianchi at the University of Florida) involves using both inorganic and organic geochemical proxies from a sediment core recovered from near the Galapagos Islands to reconstruct a comprehensive record of Eastern Equatorial Pacific climate change and ENSO variability across multiple extreme climate events over the last 65,000 years. Results generated from this research will aid in the prediction of how ENSO will change over the next century and greatly improve future mitigation efforts. Dr. Schmidt is currently looking for graduate students to come work with him in his new paleoclimate lab at Old Dominion University.
